Assassins working as a team
Players working as a team is a very questionable subject when it comes to a sense of fairness. It can be considered unfair on lone wolves who don't know any other players in the game, it can also be intimidating when players start attacking players in groups. At the same time it is always more fun to share an experience with other people, and people are inevitably going to work together anyway. Because of this I have created this page on the matter.
The Rules on teamwork
Players working together to kill the same target must be able to justify their actions. e.g. they might both have a writ for that target, or the target might be on the wanted list. If players attack someone with the excuse "I was helping a friend" then that player will be penalised.
A player lingering around their friends during a kill as "backup" (looking for a self-defence kill) in hope the target will suddenly whip out a weapon will also be heavily penalised; this action is obviously unsportsmanlike. If however you just so happen to be in a group when some maniac comes at you with a knife then they are fair game since there is no way to know who their target is.
Players must take into consideration how large groups can appear intimidating. Because of this large numbers of players should not take actions such as swarming an unknown player’s house.
Police cannot work with assassins. Any police known to be helping assassins will be removed from the police force. Thugs are only able to help the assassin that hired them, and must be in the same location as that assassin, or another thug in order to attack.
ALL players involved (or simply witness to) an attack should be mentioned in your report. Not doing so could be viewed as trying to mislead The Umpire. Groups of players acting in an unsporting fashion will be penalised, this will be down to the judgment of the Umpire.

what counts as teamwork?
As far as these rules are concerned "teamwork" is whenever you are activly working as a team in order to kill an assassin.
The Umpire won't bat an eyelid at anyone working together to create weapons, set up home defences, or sharing information on targets. Even being a minor pawn in an assassins plan to ambush a player is fine, provided you are not activly involved in the assassination (i.e. you can go along with a suspected ambush, but you can't join in with the attack).

The umpires view on teamwork
To be frank, players working in groups are a pain in The Umpires butt. A large number of complains received are about players working as groups. Groups of players also seem to be more willing to bend the rules, probably because they are trying to show off to each other.
Because of this if a known group of players become a thorn in The Umpires side then ensuring that none of them receive writs in common, or that they get each other as writs would put a smile on The Umpires face.
Originally thugs were introduces as an alternative to assassins working together. This didn't really work since players were inevitably going to work as a team anyway, and situations just arose where players would 'forget' to mention if they were working with anyone else.
Overall it would be unfair to outright ban teamwork since this is meant to be a social game. If however a group becomes to big for its boots then prepare to have your toes stepped on.
